Celebration of International Peace Day

On the occasion of International Peace Day on 21st September 2019 WPC, BRUR organised a day-long programme. Starting with a rally in the morning, a seminar, an essay competition; all ended with a prize-giving ceremony to the essay competition winners.

Inauguration of Women Peace Cafe at Begum Rokeya University

The Centre for Peace and Justice (CPJ) of Brac University launched Women Peace Café at Begum Rokeya University Rangpur on 10th of March 2019 under Empowered Women, Peaceful Communities Project with support of UN Women.

The establishment of the Women Peace Café is an innovative and pioneering initiative to engage young female students in the promotion of peace and cohesion in society. This Women Peace Café will work as a platform as well as an incubation centre for one hundred and sixty-one female students of BRUR who recently completed 3 –day training on Entrepreneurship Skills organized by CPJ under this project. This cafe will empower young women through nurturing innovation for social entrepreneurship development promoting peaceful, cohesive and prosperous Bangladesh.

The Café was jointly inaugurated by Ms. Shoko Ishikawa, Country Representative of UN Women Bangladesh, Prof. Dr. Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, Vice Chancellor of BRUR, and Barrister Manzoor Hasan OBE, Executive Director of CPJ, Brac University in a ceremonial and festive mode. The chief guests, guests of honour and other guests inaugurated the Peace Café by releasing pigeons and opening the Café office for students. Dr. Samia Huq, Associate Professor, Department of Economics and Social Sciences, Brac University dignified the occasion as guests of honour while Muhammad Badiuzzaman, Research Coordinator of CPJ and Coordinator of this project was also present. The establishment of this Café is an outcome of a project jointly implemented by CPJ of Brac University and Dr. Wazed Research and Training Institute of BRUR with the financial support of UN Women Bangladesh. To be noted that CPJ is implementing this project in two public universities; Begum Rokeya University Rangpur and Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Mymensingh since June 2018.

On this memorable occasion, Women Peace Café of BRUR organised several events; a drawing competition on ‘Women for Peace, Cohesion and Prosperity’; collecting International Women’s Day pledges from students of BRUR, an exhibition of drawings on “River of Life”, rally for the celebration of International Women’s Day and a valedictory session where the designated guests discussed the importance of such kind of initiatives with the youths and in the regional universities outside the capital, Dhaka. The session was concluded by handing over the seed funds to the Women Peace Café members to bring their innovative business ideas into reality. In line with these activities, a social media campaign was also initiated on Facebook to celebrate the launching of Café and International Women Day 2019.

The whole campus of BRUR was in festive mode where a large number of students and faculty members of BRUR participated. A team from UN Women, and faculty members of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Mymensingh were present in the event as designated guests.

A national colloquium will be held on 30th of March 2019 at BRAC Centre Inn where the findings and learning of the project will be shared with national and international level stakeholders and policymakers.

WPC BRUR Celebrated the International Women’s Day

Women Peace Cafe, Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) celebrated the International Women’s Day on 8 March, 2020. The celebration had more than 400 participants through a series of events such as cycling rally, debate, chess & photography contest, taekwondo training display and discussion meeting with its newly established Women Peace Cafés (WPC) at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) and Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Mymensingh (JKKNIU). Vice President International and Interim Head of HR of Brac University, Mr. Jonathan Cartmell and the Executive Director of the Centre for Peace and Justice Barrister Manzoor Hasan participated as the special guests to the celebration of BRUR campus. The speakers and guests discussed the importance of the day for women empowerment and generation equality. They have appreciated the WPC activities and urged the sustainable operation of the café without donor dependency in the future.

The guests and participants of both WPC have projected the theme of this year’s Women’s Day “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights” through placards, banners, festoons and t-shirts.

CPJ has facilitated the establishment of WPC at two regional universities. This is an innovative and pioneering initiative to engage young female students for promoting peace and cohesion in society under ‘Empowered Women’ and ‘Peaceful Communities’ projects. Both projects are supported by UN Women Bangladesh. Mr. Zia Uddin has been coordinating the WPC initiatives and the celebration of this day at both JKKNIU and BRUR campus as a project manager of Empowered Women Peaceful Communities Project at CPJ.

On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, both WPC’s undertaken a number of initiatives to create awareness among both male and female students. WPC BRUR organized a debate competition on Women’s Peace and Security, taekwondo training by 80 students who received a 3-month long training from WPC, photography competition on Empowered Women, launching of the WPC website, magazine and brochure and photography exhibition on the yearlong activities of WPC.

On the occasion of the celebration, the WPC BRUR has awarded certificates to 40 students who completed a 3-month long training by WPC BRUR.

To commemorate the pioneer of women’s rights and empowerment in South Asia, Begum Rokeya, the delegation of CPJ BracU along with selected mentors and members of WPCs visited the Begum Rokeya Memorial Centre at Pairabond, Rangpur.
